It depends. If you have an OS 9 iMac, the old one, don't attempt it. You will erase all the songs on your iPod.
Check your temporary file folder in your Mac hardrive icon and see if your old music MP3 files still exists. You could always move the MP3 files out and transfer them back into iTunes.
Go to http://www.apple.com and check with tech support if you are unable to locate your missing files. They will probably help you with this type of problem and in the process, give you techniques in updating your system.
So sorry that the Mac crashed. In the future, make sure you have a back up when this happens to avoid losing important pictures, docs, and songs.

Can you still see your ipod when you plug it in?
I do not recommend using the software that retrieves the tracks - like ipod rip - I lost all my music trying that one.
The music is in a hidden folder - use the link below to access them, then you can drag them back to itunes.
You have to use the terminal, but it is easy if you follow the instructions.
Good luck

I do know of a program you can use- so there is such a thing as to transfer your songs from your ipod to computer. Problem though- i think it is illegal and don't how it works, what it's called or how to get it!!
