Hi. I just got a snake, but I don't know anything about snakes! Can you give me some advice?

He's a brown-swamp greenish colo(u)r, his belly has cream colo(u)red stripes with black squares, and he's about 40 cm long.

What kind of snake is this?

What does he eat?

Is he poisonous?

If anyone has any advice, or a good website, I would appreciate it very much.

Please, I would love to know the answers to these questions, please add details.

How did you get this snake? Did you buy it? If so, why didn't you ask anything about it from the person you bought it from then?
Did you catch it? If you're out looking for and catching snakes, why not get a field guide? That way, you can find out what you're looking at -before- you pick it up.
If you caught it and don't have a field guide, what in blazes possessed you to pick it up? Have you been watching too many idiots on television who don't tell people not to go picking up potentially venomous wildlife?

Really, I'm curious to know the reasoning behind this phenomenon that is so common here on Y!A, it's nothing against you personally, but I see so many of these questions, and if I post this in general population, everyone who does it will get scared because I tried it before and there was more response from people who agreed with my viewpoint than from people who I was referring to.

Edited to add.....
Oh yeah, your question... descriptions like this don't work too well, it helps to know where you live if you caught this snake so we can use a little deductive reasoning, because just going by your description, this could be any number of snakes, my guesses without digging out my books are green water snake, garter snake, ribbon snake, southern hognose, and who knows what else, of course I'm going with things that if I go outside and do some tromping, I can find them all within about 20 miles from my house. I hope you see my message here, without a decent photo to work from and some idea of where this snake came from, no one can be sure to be able to help you.

You should visit Kingsnake.com and ask this question, you may even find photos to help you identify your snake. I don't know what country you are in, but there are many sites around the world...if you're Australian, try Aussiepythons.com.

Until then, I wouldn't touch it in case it is in fact venomous.

I will never understand why people insist on getting animals that they know nothing about. You should thoroughly research any animal you are considering keeping, including relevant licensing in your state/country. Please, seek help through one of these forums right now, as it is important that you take care of the snake's basic needs immediately, and that you ascertain that its not going to kill you should it bite you.
Good luck.

Did you find it because if you did you should let it go. And if you really want a snake, do some research then buy one.

I'm sorry, and I don't mean to be sarcastic, but I just HAVE to ask....isn't once you already have the snake just a little too late to be asking is it venomous??
