There is a case that is in the news this week, a girl who was arrested outside the nightclub in Sheffield a and needed to be restrained. The policeman was seen striking the girl 5 times. She is now threatening civil action. Was excessive force used or were the actions of the police justified? What are your views on this issue? I know what I think, how about you?

Of course she is fighting it, she didn't even remember it she was so drunk. Obviously, someone is just using her now to make a statement, make her rich and she is just fine and dandy with that.

The fact she was so drunk she was foaming at the mouth as she spat on the officer, kicked him in the groin which is clearly evident, she threw herself down the stairs as she fought like a wild (rabid) animal and grabbed his nuts in order to incapacitate him...means NOTHING however...nor does the fact she was kicked out of the bar but kept going back and smashed windows to cars outside and was so out of control 4 cops had to come...mean anything!

Give me a friggin break. Even with 3 guys holding her down she clawed and fought and the guy pounded her shoulder until she couldn't claw at him anymore in order to handcuff her....good for him...the dirty little skank got her just desserts.

Sorry to disagree with your first few answers (I didn't read any further). From the videotape there were four people restraining her. The policeman concerned had one arm to contend with. He has admitted hitting her as hard as he could (four or five times?). Hardly a case of using minimal or reasonable force to restrain her. While the police, as a whole, do a good job to deny there might be occasional instances of police brutality, is to deny the stark realities of life. Simply donning a uniform does not mean you are above baser human reactions.

If she wasn't putting up a fight they wouldn't have to subdue her.
People who fight while being arrested whine about excessive force.
In 99% of the cases the police are cleared of using excessive force.
It makes good headlines.

Considering all the monday morning quarterbacks saying police shouldn't be so hard on this poor people.
The forget about the kick, biting , and spiting the police are dealing with at the time.

I side with the police.
A criminal is a criminal in the process of a crime.
Sorry they didn't just jump on her for no reason.

The girl got what she deserved. ELLE and ABLUEBOB--she was not punched in the face at anytime during this arrest, and it is total rubbish for anyone to suggest she was--there was a piece on this story on news at ten last night, showing the cctv itself, and where the girl in question gave a statement--if she had of been punched in the face five times by this policeman, her face would have looked like a bag of bolts--as it was there were no marks upon her face at all...so don't make it out to be any more than what it is. She will be making money out of this little escapade, to be sure.

She was already thrown out of a club by bouncers. Then became violent towards the police AFTER damaging cars...The policeman admitted punching her ARM to release her grip on him...It go's without saying that if you don't let go the first time you can expect another one...Ask any child in the playground.
When did she decide to have the fit before or after the arrest.?
A blind man CAN see what's coming now..Get your money out( Met police )
IF, they discover that she lied about it being racial what sentence will she get.?

I didn't think he used enough force,if the police used a lot more force on a lot more of these thugs, maybe old people and vulnerable people could walk the streets in safety,IE last week a 61 year old man was thrown out of a train by thugs,I would like the same sort of violence, and more severe given to them, wishing the train was moving at high speed.

really dont believe we have another question on this and that people still question the officers actions.
it is very easy to break an arm or wrist while trying to force a persons arms back, a punch (or few) to the top of the arm weakens resistance and makes it harder for the criminal to struggle.
i would prefer a nice bruise at the top of my arm to a broken bone.
the officer told of his actions in his report he made no attempt to hide anything.
the police had no way of knowing if the person they were trying to arrest was carrying a weapon, or high on drugs therefore they have to protect themselves first.

At first I thought, 'That's massively out of order!' but then, I heard the full report and saw her attack the Copper in the first place. Got to say, if you try to stick it to the Fuzz, you will come off second best and it's your own fault, it's part and parcel or breaking the law.

Funny old thing they then decided to play the race card so she'll probably win vast amounts of compensation.

They've got a pretty hard job out there with little or no thanks from the public - it's a good job she wasn't in LA, she could have been Tazered or shot. Bummer!

I think he was quite right. She was attacking him and he had to use some way to stop this - she was vandalising someones car, she was drunk and out of control - i say let the police do their job and stop the witch hunt for every police officer that using methods that they are taught in training.

People refer to her as the poor girl and that she got beaten - she isnt a poor girl and she didnt get beaten - she was resisting arrest and was dealt with in the appropriate manner

At first sight it looks horrific.

Burly copper beating up a teenage girl and it's all caught on video.

Howls of protest greeted the footage. This was, we were told police brutality of the worst kind.

And because Toni Comer is black it exploded into a race row.

But let's examine the evidence.

Footage of Ms Comer Wrestled to the ground lasts just a few seconds.

Moments earlier she'd left a nightclub drunk and vandalised cars.

When PC Mulhall arrived she resisted arrest and attacked him.

He wasn't to know if Ms Comer had a knife or something worse.

Punching the top of her flailing arm so she could be handcuffed was perfectly reasonable.

Those quick to criticise the police have never faced the terror of confronting and detaining a violent drunk in the middle of the night and have only witnessed it from the comfort of their arm chair.

PC Mulhalls job is to protect those people quick to criticise. By detaining Ms Comer safely and quickly he was doing his duty to the best of his ability.

She suffered no injuries and needed no medical attention as a result of the arrest.

How depressing a copper had been taken off front line duty and put in charge of paperclips because of a few inconclusive seconds of video.

South Yorkshire Police should not bow to a PC-inspired witch hunt which has rushed to judgement and played the race card.

Police Constable Mulhall should be back where he belongs.

On the beat, protecting the public.
