I need to know whats average and whats excessive.
Also if my husband has been rinsing bottles out during the night and reusing them without properly washing them with soap is that really bad for my baby? And are formula fed infants supposed to have such awful smelling messy diapers?

With regards to the bottles, formula bottles need to be sterilised between each use. If you are breastfeeding then hot soapy water is fine to wash them and hot water to rinse them.

Yes re the awful smelling diapers. Sorry about that one! I never experienced personally but the other girls who formula fed in my mothers group shared *lovely* stories :)

Average sleeping times vary from about 15-19 hours a day...

My four week old slept at least 20 hours. Bottles should never be used by only rinsing. They should be washed properly with soap, warm water and sterilized or boiled before second usage. Bottles are a major source of infection. Infection happens if they are not kept clean. For that matter don't even let your hand touch the teat. Be very careful with your little one. Have one bottle for every feed.
Formula fed babies do have smelly diapers. Breast fed babies don't have smelly diapers. This is because of the formula. It will increase when you start solids and semi solids.

Four-weeks-old do not make a difference between day and night yet although you can start teaching him/her to sleep more during the night. At that age babies usually sleep between the feeding which are 3 to 3and 1/2 hours apart. But s/he may happen to skip a nap for some reason or take a longer nap during the night. Bottles and nipples not only have to be washed well but also STERILIZED. Babies do not have the adequate flora in their intestines to fight the germs so careful with hygiene. Best thing is to have 7 or 8 bottles which you can sterilize once a day and then have one for each feeding. And yes, formula fed infants have smellier BMs.

Babies in the first three months could eventually sleep 18 hours. That's the average. My child slept very little at three months, while my second child seemed to sleep too much, he used to wake up only to be fed and cleaned up and fell asleep again.
Don't worry, kids are all different. Just see if he doesn't cry too much, he may have a little bubbles in his tummy. That's normal.
As for the bottles, try at least to wash with clean water before re-using. It's not bad, but it's not good.
Diapers of forumula fed infants STINK terribly sometimes. That's a fact. :-)
Enjoy :-)))

1) Average time for sleep for month old babies is around 12 hours a day. Babies often sleep in 40 minutes cycles so this is broken down during 24 hour period (mother too is broken down during this time !!!).

2) Baby will not be unduly affected by not rinsing bottles out entirely, but as a mother I would rinse with warm water after sudding (a natural and understood reaction).

3) Yes .. infants often have very smelly nappies.

All the best to you .. enjoy your bub !!!

Your 4 week old should only be awake a few hours a day, really 5-8 is a lot for most babies. Yes what your husband is doing is bad for your baby, you need to wash them properly and sterilize them. Formula fed babies diapers are very stinky!! So are their burps!

As much as it needs to. All babies are different.

Bacteria grows in botties just as it does in dishes. Be sure to wash those bottles with hot water and rinse good or your baby may start suffering with stomach pain. (That means lots of crying and doctor visits)

All dirty diapers are messy and smelly!! Unless the bowel movement is unusual such as a green color (which indicates infection), extremely loose bowels, etc. there should be no concern.

At 4 weeks - not much, usually. (as in not for long periods.)
but every baby is different! they have a usual eat, sleep, poo routine, but some cat nap others have big sleeps.

yes, formula fed babys are stinky poo's!!! breast fed babys dont really smell at all.
At 4 weeks daddy should still be cleaning babys bottles properly!! at least with hot soapy water at night and properly sterilising during the day. I think its around 3 months when you can stop steriliser properly - but dont quote me on that! But i think its still a good idea to do it to the bottles you use for formula.
After you eat dinner, just give daddys plate a quick rinse and leave it for tomorrow night...see if he likes it! ;)

Hi,
a four week old baby will sleep a lot, at that age that is practically all they do- feed and sleep. This changes gradually as they get older.
Bottles should be cleaned properly using a bottlebrush and then they should be sterilized before using them again. Small babies are very prone to stomach upsets and this could be why the nappies are so bad
