Some stores (like Old Navy & H&M) have already made gift packages. Some contain an outfit and a sweater and a hat, some have booties, sweaters and mittens, etc.
Sleeper sets are cute gifts. Babies can use lots of onesies and booties/socks. You can also get a gift certificate for the mom to buy whatever she wants/needs for the baby (make sure it is something she can use online too. That way she doesn't have to leave the house to purchase it/pick it up).

Bibs are always a great idea, babies go through them at a great rate! Or All in one sleepsuits. Newborns pretty much live in these.
If you want to give something more personal, how about a 'my 1st year" book where they can record all the details of their babys first 12 months, or order the newspaper from the day he was born.
If none of those are any good, just walk the aisles of the baby section, there are lots of great little cute baby items that I'm sure your friend will think is a great gift!

You could buy him an outfit, but the thing with that is, an outfit won't last forever. I would buy him one of those birth certificate pillows where you can fill out all their birth info. with a cloth marker. You could also get something for his nursery like a little blue piggy bank. Just something that he could see when he's older. If not, I'm sure she has a whole list of stuff she needs or thought about trying. Try burp cloths. Always need extras of those. Or, you could get him a baby blanket. A really soft blue one maybe?

My all time favourite baby gift is a monogrammed baby blanket from Lands' End. It's $20, and the monogram (for three lines!!) is $5. BARGAIN!!
They have blankies in all colours and you can put the name, date, and pounds/ounces on it. It makes a keepsake! Look up the Scottish Lace Baby Blanket.

I like getting toys for my baby.... shes really starting to love them, the kind that crinkle or a rattyle to work on small motor skills.
bibs are great too.... as well as blankets, I use them instead of burp rags they are always around anyway
another thin I like getting is coats or stuff that is considerably larger so she'll have clothes later on.
OH yeah.... the baby einstein videos...BIG hit with my little one.

In China, people like to give the new born children silver bracelets. That means give good luck to this baby. And there are some Chinese characters carved on the bracelet, means longevity and wealth.

how about some clothes. my mom gave me this great tip about buying baby clothes. everyone gets the mother clothes for her baby that would fit right away; but we all know how fast babies grow right out of their clothes. its quite expensive! so look into getting your friend clothes for their baby that will fit in 6 months to a year. im sure they'll be grateful because they won't have to buy ALL new clothes and will think of you then when they can pull it out of the drawer for their baby to wear.
