I blame this website

And it will become real when people start calling in for the people that they like and want to see continue on the next week instead of letting everybody else calling and voting in.

I don't think there's anyway to avoid the popularity part of it--unfortunately. Look at what happened to Chris last year. He definitely SHOULD have won. Taylor Hicks??? Pah-leez!! I'm sooooo ready for Sanjaya to go home. I'm starting to believe the "voting for the worse" theory that some people believe has taken over American Idol. I'll keep voting for the folks I want to win though--the REAL singers.

Its not. Obviously the majority of these people who audition are more interested in becoming "Celebrities" over signed artists. Theres a difference. Hopefully the judges are keen enough to weed out the wannabes.

When the show is not popular it will focus more on real talent. Don't hold your breath.
