I understand you wondering about that. When I had my daugther, I only had a trickle. I knew it was amniotic fluid because it was clear and yellowish and I felt it coming down like menstrual discharge feels. But it was just a little and then it stopped. I had contractions but they were really mild so i took my time to go to hospital. When I was getting ready for a check-up, they asked me: Did your water break? I said: I don't know, I have to go to bathroom and see. Everybody laughed and I didn't know why. Well, the doctor inserted her finger to check and pushed my daughter's head. Then I knew why everybody laughed - it felt like a whole bucket of water splashed on the floor. So no way you are going to miss it or sleep through it. You might not have immeadiate contractions though. No matter when or how your water breaks, get ready and go to hospital. I don't think doctors like to wait much after the water has broken for risk of infections. If you don't have contratcions soon enough, they are going to induce.

discharge is very common during pregnancy. It can be clear, white or yellow in appearance and be a little bit more thicker than water. Sometimes women get confused between waters and discharge (i know i did) and sometimes a little bit of urinal leaking can occur because the baby is pressing down on your pelvis and bladder.
When your waters break they dont have to "break" as in a large gush of fluid. For some you can leak for days in small amounts. The best way to find a leak is to put a pad on and sleep overnight with it in. If there is a fair bit of fluid in the pad and it doesnt look like discharge KEEP it and take it to your doctor so they can test it to see if it is amniotic fluid.
A woman can sometimes go days with their waters broken before they actually go into labour. But usually its within 24hours. Get it checked as soon as possible though if you have suspicions that they have broken. An infection can sometimes set in if the waters have been broken for too long and you havent gone into labour. And yes sometimes there can be a little blood. But usually it is clear.

If your water breaks you will know about it!! You will experience like a popping kind og feeling and a great sense of release... sounds strange hey. It should be clear, if its a greeninsh colour you need to go into hospital right away - although if it does break you should contact hospital anyway.. It is possible for your water to leak also, and this may be a little harder to distinguish, but it will be more than discharge, it will be just like water, not thick at all.. good luck

Honey, you'll know when your water break. Even I can't go on sleeping after the water gushed out of me the last time...I ended up looking like somebody just fished me out of a pond! Chances are, if you haven't had contractions before that, than you would right after the water breaks.
The water is clear, if it's not, then it is something to be concerned about.
Don't worry, if it happens you'll know it's not just another discharge. Congratulations and good luck, girl.

The water may leak a bit, then you may not notice much (and it may even stop leaking again, as happened with me, 2 weeks before the birth) but you definately notice a "break", no matter how busy you are. The contractions may not start right away, or they may have started already.... but you`ll notice those too! If your water does break, don`t panic, just get yourself ready and get someone to take you to the hospital. Try to lie down, if you can.
It`s all normal. Good luck!

Honey, if your water breaks, you'll know it. It's more than just a little bit of water. Usually the fluid is clear. Most women are already having contractions before their water breaks. These are questions you probably should be asking your doctor....

If there is colour in your waters e.g. yellow or brown be cautious it could mean there are problems. If your baby becomes distressed and passes his or her first bowel movement they could swallow it and die.
Labor can last for days so if you notice your waters breaking (and you will!) contact the labor ward for advice. They may advise you to stay at home andr relax!
