does anyone know if you can get your surname changed without the marriage part?? so you take on your partners surname.

You can change your name to anything you want. i changed my name by going to a solicitor. the reason was my mum took on her boyfriends name and with it we all change. we were only 8 so didn't know any different. then at school we were all known as the bf name, NI numbers came in that name but birth certificate were in original name, so had to pay for it to be done legally. cost about £150 all in all.

You may call yourself anything you like.
To assume any name for official purposes, get a solicitor to draw up a change of name deed. It's cheaper than getting married too!
You will need it for things like passports, pensions, banks etc.

Only if you live in a state that recognizes common-law marriage. You need to call an attorney to ask how it has to be done legally. Otherwise just start using that name. My fiance already calls me by his last name, though I don't don't sign anything yet with his name. My state does recognize common-law.

You can pay for a legal name change but that would be seen as strange if you aren't married to them. People might even think y ou're desperate and unable to get a committment from your partner.
