good question - if the electric piano has good 'action' meaning that it takes real pressure on the keys rather than a feather touch -
and it has good tone and posture for the student - a $200 electric is more affordable than a $1500 wooden upright

and the electric piano does not have to be tuned

but I learned on a woodie YAMAHA and Young Chang

so if they are still at it two years later - get them a woodie

For teaching a child, I am assuming an age of 6-9. I think as an introduction, an electronic KEYBOARD is a practical and economical start to see if the child is even going to have an interest before you put out any real money. Have a piano player with you to test and offer suggestions when you shop. Remember, you are getting an inexpensive start. That doesn't mean be CHEAP. It needs to sound good, feel substantial, and look like it will be sufficient for a few years. Keyboards have come a long way in just a few years.

depending on the age of the child -for younger, novices, buy a keyboard. talk to a piano teacher who specializes in children. you may end up spending $200-$300. the most important factor in the keyboard will be the "weighted keys". these mimic a real piano.
