Has anyone had this problem, or have any other ideas what it might be? If it's a lifter should it just need a valve adjustment, and how much should I expect to pay? Would this effect fuel economy? I've been getting about 19-20mpg, it's mostly city driving but I drive pretty conservatively. I would think I should get a little better mileage than that. Thanks.

Once again, not enough info. A 'ticking' sound from a 3,000 lb. automobile made from 1,000's of parts going who knows how fast on who knows what kind of road?
That's like saying,"my car makes a noise when I turn it over." Yes...and?
I am going to take a wild guess that you're assuming the noise comes from the engine area. Have you taken a long screwdriver or something similar and 'listened' to the valves and lifters area of the engine? By that I mean putting the metal end of the driver on the spot where the tick may be coming from and held the handle to your ear. This amplifies the noise and helps greatly in determining where the sound comes from.
This is a great diagnostic test done simply on virtually any place you feel noise may be coming from.
Once you've determined where the noise is coming from for certain, then come back on and tell us that and someone should be able to help you much better with your question.

f you're hearing the ticking from inside the car and it sounds like it's from the dashboard area, it could be as simple as your speedometer cable.

But more info...we NEED more info!

Ok, could be lifters, but you need to have it checked by an ASE certified mechanic, they will be able to better answer your question. But my biggest issue is with this RP guy. you really should keep youe mouth shut becausre you only made yourself look stupid, the whole screwdriver thing, yeah its pretty damn common, and alot of people who know what the heck they are doing have used it, However, you do have to know what your listening for. So dont ridicule a statement because your too stupid to know that its actually done.

You can get a ' haynes' manual at your favorite parts place for $18 & with a little prep & a motorhead buddy fix it & learn a bunch. Do all your maintenance & you'll have a SWEET runnin car =^ ) Do a valve adjustment after you've done ALL required maintenance.Belts don't tick.
