Hi,
I've had this problem a few times and I understand your frustration! They can get onto your computer if you don't have anti-virus software installed. But even if you do, whenever you download anything from the internet, they are attatched and get into your system. I had an expert take my computer away to "clean" it, but then downloaded some apparently innocent tools from internet and the pop-ups came back. So I got it cleaned again and haven't downloaded anything at all from the internet since..that was six months ago and the problem is solved!
So my advice is to do what I did and get it cleaned, it's the only reliable way to get rid of pop-ups, and then never ever download anything!!
Hope this helps.

Go to www.downloads.com & download spybot/search & destroy to remove all the spyware.
Then also look for Pop up stopper-it's also free -& download & install that program & that should help.
Make sure you run your anti-virus once a week or more & the spybot program once a week or more.Try & quit visiting the websites that put spyware into your pc.
The google toolbar also has a good pop up stopper.

Switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

Unless you switch off system restore and scan in safe mode, you'll be lucky to get rid.

The popups telling you you have a virus are telling the truth. And they are the virus!

Try getting a good Antivirus ("Premium" one, free trial, such as Mcafee etc.) once your done, simply unistall it.
