i had a ACL injury in my knee some 5 years back. Arthroscopy was performed on me and the torn ligament was removed. I couldnt find time since then to get the reconstruction surgery done. would it be possible for reconstruction to be 100% successful ? Would i be able to run like normal person again ?

I am a nurse and love orthopedics, however, only being a nurse a few years and seeing only 10-15 ACL reconstructions, I know they take a long time (3-4 hours) and we never see the same patients again for the same knee. I think the most important thing is recovery, because everyone thinks that just because they can walk, they are healed, thats not the case, you cat hurt it worse then it was prior to the surgery. If you get it done, take the full physical therapy course offered, and if you dont think its enough, then ask for more.

I don't know about the first persons answer saying ACL reconstructions take 3 to 4 hours. Mine took an hour, and the surgeon estimated 1 1/2 hours before going in.

I was told in the past they didn't used to reconstruct ACL's right away, they used to wait months or years until your knee blew out all the way.

The surgery takes a ligament and a couple of screws and attaches it to your bones, not like they repair yours. I wouldn't see why it would matter how long it's been torn. But go see a doctor, they are the one who will put their money where their mouth is.

Good luck with it, will be a lot of physical therapy afterwards.

Hello, First, you need to go and see your Orthopedic doctor and get a current MRI. It is possible to have the ACL surgery and it be a success. The MRI would show any deterioration, or more damage since the initial scope was done. Only the surgeon can tell you if you will be able to run "like a normal person again", but most patients fully recover all mobility after an ACL. Best of luck!

ACL reconstruction has the best results if done early. I wouldn't expect too much after 5 years, definitely not 100%.
