Build inbound links to your website.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.

The very best way to get lots of traffic to your new website is to continue adding more and more quality information to your site. This will help more people searching for info to be able to find your site.
Make sure the words you use on your pages and the words people are using to search for things related to the topic of your site. Some words are more likely to be searched for than others and you need to know your most valuable words.
Get other sites to link to yours. Get listed in the directories.
