Do the following:
Start -> Run
Type regedit in the dialog box and hit OK

Follow the registry edits detailed on this document: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/taskmanager.reg

Or better still, Open this page in IE - I think Windows might automatically apply the settings. I am not certain but I think IE can recognise registry files and load them into your registry automatically. If it doent, then do it manually as I said above :)

Hope this helps.

Many reason why this may have gone - Yes AW regedits are good (and there are other ones - look below) - But before you start messing with the windows registry try a few other things first (because if you get things wrong in the registry then it can mess your pc up - big time)

Firstly try a system restore - to a time you think that it may have been working

Then download a program ccleaner (type this in google) then look for issues - this program automatically looks for registry errors.

If another program is using the task manager when you try to open it - this may point to spyware etc as the task manager is one of the windows vital system and should be there all the time.

Restart the computer and go into safe mode (when computer turns off then on again keep on tapping f5 or f8 then select safemode) - try the taskmanager now - also try using LEFT ctrl > LEFT shift and escape (another option for task manager)

Download a good spyware sweeper from www.download.com (try spybot and lavasoft ad aware - both free and good)

also check out the services to make sure none off these are disabled > click start > run > type > services.msc

if none of these work then go for the reg fixes > try AW's first from kelly's corner also a add try this afterwards

reged
In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs
In the right pane, right-click ObjectName, and then click Modify.

In the Value data box, type LocalSystem, and then click OK.

Note You must type "LocalSystem" exactly as it appears in this step. If you do not type this term correctly, Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) does not run, the Windows icons are unavailable after the computer restarts, and the Start button is unavailable after the computer restarts.
Restart your computer

Hope this helps

It could be that spyware or a virus have disabled your task manager.
Switch off System Restore as back up files may be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run your anti virus and anti spyware in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware

And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
https://addons.mozilla.org/search.php?q=ad+block&type=A&app=firefox - Adblock Plus
http://www.ccleaner.com - Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that manages cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/securitytask.html - Security task manager is a 30 day trial but that should be long enough for you to figure out whats wrong, it will list the proccesses and give them a threat status.

1.Check to see if you have administrator rights, it may be
that it changed your access rights.
2.try Start, run, taskmgr ? if the first does not work.
3.run anti-virus and see if its a virus in the system

Try booting into safe mode and doing all the scans etc.

If you still have problems then maybe you need to do a repair install of Windows.

I`m assuming that you`re either running Windows 2000 or XP.

Instructions on how to do a repair are at:http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic8356.html
