The previous answer is accurate , but to document all of the rule variations would be too difficult to duplicate here. Check out the website for the Special Olympics for specific details.

If you get the opportunity to attend , don't miss out . I was asked to serve as an announcer for track & field S O events several years ago, & it;s very rewarding to witness the effort & will exerted by participants.

Special Olympics adopt the regular Olympic sports rules for the more abled athletes, but also have modified sports rules for those with higher intellectual disabilities, so that everyone gets to learn the sports skills and opportunities to enjoy meaningful competition.
Thanks Santabud for volunteering, i've been working with persons with intellectual disabilities for slightly more than 10years and still counting, enjoying every moment of it!
