Can anyone tell me how to play the part with the 020 and the 3 above it. It says in the tab instructions that it is a 'triad.' The sample is from sanitarium by metallica.

Thanks

If it is a hammer on, how does the '3' above it fit into the equation?
It hasn't pasted very well, if you have a look here you'll see it better http://www.guitaretab.com/m/metallica/11904.html

I saw the tab. The sign "_3_" is the sign for the triad, not the sign for "play 3rd fret here." Notice that the lines for the frets you play are halfway of the numbers' height (hyphens, dashes), while the 3 is surrounded by underscores, the lines at the bottom, which is the sign for the triad of the notes written below it (your 0-2-0). And that triad, as the first dude said, is pick-hammer-pull.

NO, guitar tab is garbage to me over the years they are never 100% accurate anyways. Learning by ear or praticing scales, or just jamming along with songs will teach you the song. Feel is what I crave for playing guitar not note for note everytime.

It's a hammer-on, pull-of. It's when you tap on the string with your finger and then pull the string with that same finger when you pull your finger off.
