Do you think Beckham's arrival in the united states is going to raise levels of interest to be like Basketball or American Football? He surely has star status unlike Pele who only appealed to soccer fans.

No, the United States has little interest in soccer and Beckham's arrival will hardly raise it to the level of golf or tennis in the United States, let alone Basketball or American Football. The day soccer in the US reaches the same level of popularity as American Football is when penalty kicks are done with large hand-grenades rather than soccer-balls.

The bad news for football in US is that NFL is #1 and that will never change - the sport is very popular and the league is too well run. The good news for football in US is that since MLS plays the spring-autumn schedule, it does not have to compete with football for 2/3 of its season. Its competition in spring is baseball, basketball, and hockey. Its competition in summer is only baseball and NASCAR. That leaves room for people to pay more attention to MLS. Beckham will help to increase interest in football in US, but he will not alone make a top sport. Americans love to play soccer and not watch it. The only way soccer becomes big in US, on par with NBA and baseball is if there is an American-born star playing in Europe. America loves the winner and an American starring in a major European league would be a bigger boost than Beckham.

Beckham will provide alot of buzz for a while, but MLS needs to build its stars and level of play from within. There are a lot of soccer fans in this country, but they don't watch the MLS.

a big NO.of course, like what u said, beckham does has the star status but the 'star status' that he own is not within the football industry.he is actually busy using his 'star status' in advertistment.
there could be posibility that at first, people in USA will gonna have interests in soccer but it is just temporary.they will getting sick of it after a while.
hey, they dont even care about their national soccer team competing in the World Cup 2006.

americans love the spectacular, ie nascar wrecks, hockey fights and fireworks. note that all these things play well to those with short attention spans.

games such as soccer, hockey(other than the fights) and sex, that require more depth, subtlety and nuance are beyond their limited grasp.

so, no, beckham will not raise the status of the game in america for more than a short period of time but his and posh's reality show will be the bee's knees.

No, largely because soccer is a painfully boring sport. Americans haven't learned to merge soccer with drinking... yet. That's why NASCAR works.
