Because the city of Newcastle is referred to as the 'Toon' (i.e. Town) and we have an Army of loyal supporters.

it may't be in a city. yet, St James' is interior the city centre. i do no longer know approximately anybody else, yet i do no longer say i'm goin into city for a night out. I say i'm goin into city (or toon, because it somewhat is frequently happening in Newcastle). Come to think of of it, Glasweigans call Glasgow 'Toon' besides.
