It symbolizes the fact that for years he had three focuses:
1. Getting off of the island
2. Getting back to the woman that he loved
3. Delivering the package that got him into the mess to begin with
At the end of the movie he is off of the island, the woman that he loved had moved on, and his original task had been completed.
He was standing at a crossroad. On the one hand, he had no set direction. However, on the other hand he was unfettered and could choose any direction that he wished.

well, after 4 years in that island he finally returned to the city where he found out his girlfriend was married to another man n they had a child...so he was alone again, n I think he sort of thinking that it would be much better if he stuck 4ever on that island, with Wilson =D
that's what I think, sorry if I made mistakes
peace out
and by the way, he delivered the special package he never opened to the owner, I think that's the best part

Well, After the main character gets rescued, the ship takes him back to the mainland. He gets cleaned up and waits at the airport to go back to his home. His dentist (i think) meets him at the airport on behalf of who used to be his wife. Since it had been a few years since he had become stranded, she thought he was dead. He goes to meet her, but she has moved on, and doesnt love him in thay way anymore, as she remarried. She kept his car though...
Later on at the end you see him in his car with a new 'Wilson' (the ball who kept him sane). Now, the end bit is a little strange, but while the main character was on the island, he kept one FedEX Package. And he faught to survive so he could one day deliver it. The package gave him a reason to live. So in the end, he is delivering the Package to the address which is written on it, thanking whoever it belongs to because it saved his life (giving him reason to live).
Its a rather complecated storyline, but nevertheless its a great movie.
Hope that this explains it.
