1st, try to find out his/her reasons. Did you do smt wrong with ur friend? Or is there smt thing really bad about you and ur friend just wants to help ( but don't know any better way)? Or ur friend simply is a bad person, not worth being a friend?
2nd, answer the questions from 1st step and u'll know the right reaction.

I would tell that we seem to have different idea about friendship...if he or she doesn't get my point and keep talking bad behind my back, I would get them out of my life. When people hear they talking things about me and get to know we are not friends or we don't get well, the things they say will not be taken as real or less believable because it will be understood for most people, there are others reasons why this or that person are talking bad behind your back.

I don't know what the "right" answer is...I just know what I did when I found out my ex-best friend was bad mouthing me.
I had called my then best friend (we had been best friends for over 10 years!!) and she didn't completely hang up her cell phone. I heard her say some of the most horrific things to a friend of hers (who was hanging out with her that day) not just about me and my boyfriend, but also about my infant daughter! I mean, to say nasty things about your best friend's infant daughter, WTF?! I tried to get her attention to let her know that I was still on the phone but she never caught on. I called her later on that day and cursed her out! To me, there was no reason to ask her "why" she did it as there is no excuse for what she did.
But I guess if it was a different situation, I would ask the person if in fact they did bad mouth me, and then ask them why. I believe in confronting people-it pretty much stops people in their tracks. Only cowards talk behind people's backs.

You had better not confront them about it. If they are talking bad about you behind your back, odds are that they are doing it to other people. A person like that lacks the character to take any sort of criticism.

This gives you ideas of the kind of person you call a friend. Just ignore him/her and carry on in life and if she/he comes back to ask for forgiveness just forgive and forget but never classify that person as a friend again coz first fool is never a fool.

Best thing to do is confront them. I mean, if you want it to stop, the best thing to do is find out why they are doing it. Usually it is because you upset them in one way or another. Just talk to him/her and find out why.
