In a Networing Environment there will be a windows domain server controlling all the machines in the domain with unique names to each computers belonging to a domain, There can not be 2 machines with same name in a single domain, So if you are trying to change your computer name to a name which is already registered to some other computer in same domain, you will see a message "A Duplicate name already exists already on network"

It could mean that there are two computers which has the same name. Apart from IP address which should also be unique for every pc in a network to avoid conflict, computer names should also be unique. if you have say, 2 computers, try to name one with "MyPc1" and the other "MyPc2", this would solve the problem.
In XP, go to control panel>system>computer name>change.
