I also have twins and i used to travel in the car heaps. I used to do 11 hours straight through, only stopping for fuel..(by myself) I found i was best to drive at night while they are sleeping... I found that you didnt have to worry about them. They slept soundly throught every stop... They were about 6months up until about 5years old.. If not going through the night, just take heaps of toys, colouring pencils and if you have it dvd player for them to watch a dvd as that is what my youngerst daughter does now... Hope you have a great trip..

Recommendations: IDEALLY, a dvd player with two screens for the two kids to watch, that velcro onto the back of the front seats. Target has those. The kids are transfixed for hours. Books that you can read to the kids, healthy snacks. Frequent stops for stretching and fresh air, but remember this adds to the drive time.

I think it is really difficult, you shouldn't do it in one day, unless you can drive through the night (but then you're zombie-like when you want to visit with family, tired and cranky.)

During the day, the kids are good for only about 3 hours, 4 at most. The infants probably would do better than the other two. (Brought our 2 year old from Milwaukee to Minneapolis once, he was bonkers after 4 hours in that dang car seat, can't say I blamed him).

The only thing that I can recommend is to start out your trip about 4 in the morning, the kids will wake up around 7, they're good for about four hours, stop at 12 noon. That's half way to your folks, because of stops for food and stretching. Splurge on a hotel and hang out with the 6 year old and 4 year old in the pool.

Do the same thing the next day, arriving at the folks.

The answer to the inevitable question... how long 'til we get there...you can say " about two long shows" meaning two movies, or "about four short shows" meaning half-hour shows, etc. etc. Kids seem to be able to comprehend the length of time that way vs. a clock or a generalized "awhile."

BTW, when our kids were that young, we stayed put and made everyone come to visit us !!

If you don't hit any traffic aslong as you've got plenty of food, drink and pitstops you're going to be fine.

Just be prepared for the weather perhaps? I got stuck in traffic on a five hour journey to devon once and we were all frazzling in the heat of the sun. Get yourself some sunblinds for the windows and a coolbox just incase.

One last tip, tuck away a few suprises for emergencies e.g. some comics, sweets or a new cd. When kids start bickering a bribe can go a long way!

A good size bottle of ibuprofin ;)
Bring lots of activities for the older ones... really stock up on crayons, and paper and ... just anything you can think of.. cause yes, your attention will be on the twins.
Try and let the kids get out and stretch their legs whenever you stop...
I did a 12 hour drive, but I only have one child... you are a brave, brave woman, and I hope those in-laws are the best ones EVER :)

Bring lots of stuff to keep them occupied. And make frequent stops so they can get out, stretch their legs, and get some fresh air.
