Originality is always going to be a slow process untill music education itself is given more importance. If you look at how music has changed over the centuries, there's definate hope that new things are on the horizon, it just seems to get drawn out thanks to popular or current conventions.

Don't say that. Radiohead is good, you can't deny that, and Jeff Buckley, and there have been a few other bands. I totally agree that it's been harder and harder to find good and original music, but don't give up hope yet. Have faith in the human race, eventually people are going to get tired of the crap they call music these days. Remember some of the ridicules faddy music from the 80's, not that there wasn't some great stuff, but we got over the ridicules and most people don't even remember it now.

No, No, Music still alive with 12 year kids trying today to rip off Van Halen to Chuck Berry, and the midi mixers, and hiphops varities. Music will never die, and the probaldy have some more musicans, and styles coming with time going on. Hundered years from now people will still try to learn Eruption, and people will still try to learn Yangwies, to BB kings music in thier free time.

In the words of John Fruschiante, "Music is infinite"
I think you listen to too much radio. There is a lot of new, interesting music out there. Of course, everything is gonna have a piece of the past, but there are a lot of artists out their making their own mark. Forget radio and listen to entire albums to gage your opinion. I think you'll come away pleasantly suprised at the talent out their today.
Fiona Apple, The Klaxons, The Fratellis, The Chili Peppers themselves continue to change music, and Incubus is a true rock band that works for great music (if you stopped with their old stuff, you're missing out - Light grenades is a masterpiece).

Music is just changing it will never go away. If you don't like it don't listen. Hell Kurt changed music in his time and his style still lives on. You just don't hear well. "PEACE"
