What was the inspiration for the anime Rahxephon?

I adore this series, and I heard there may have been some old novels that inspired the storyline, but I don't know what they are. It's a really great series, hopefully more people than only me have seen it.

I don't think so.Rahxepon is a science fiction series. The anime series itself then adapted to manga and novels.
Music, time, mystery, intrigues and romance are central elements of RahXephon's plot. The series shows clear influences from philosophy and Japanese folklore, and from Western literature such as the work of James Churchward. Mesoamerican and other Pre-Columbian civilizations have a prominent place in the cultural background of the series, if this what you mean.
