Many years ago, the letters were divided up among nations. Canada got C, Great Britain got G, and the US got K, N, and W. Of these, N is seldom used; W is used for broadcast stations east of the Mississippi River, and K is used for broadcast stations west of it.

Almost all radio stations on the west coast begin with K except for a few cities west of the Mississippi River that actually start with W.
In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, radio station WBAP 820 and WFAA-TV Channel 8 (ABC) are one of those stations that start with a W.
In Kansas City, Sports Radio 810 WHB also starts is that station that starts a W west of the Mississippi.
In Pittsburgh, probably the oldest radio station throughout America, it is KDKA-AM 1020 and KDKA-TV (CBS) 2.
In Philadelphia, CBS O&O (owned and operated) stations KYW-AM 1060 and KYW-TV 3 begin with K.
