how can i chat via gmail?

google talk - which is a messenger that's similar to yahoo or msn and can be downloaded onto your PC. You'll need XP for it to work.
Else
Just look at the left of your gmail page and in the centre of the left pane you can see all your contacts, and those who are online will be shown in gree.
You can just double click on their names and a small chat window will open up. This can be used to chat with online gmail users

Go to the gmail page and download the Google Talk program.

you can use Google talk or when you log in to Gmail u see all your contacts to your left side...you can chat from there as well
