I am 16 years old. my birthday is 10/16/1990. i am a basketball player, i love basketball for everything that is it. im about 5'8 and was wondering if i could be able to dunk it by 17 birthday? i dont know my exact vertical hop. my buddy has ankle wieghts that he let me use, and right now, i started off with 5 pounds ankle. and going to move up to 15. i got a black marker and jumped along a wall and marked my jump point, and im going to measure every week and see if my jump point is going to get higher.i am going to wear the ankle wieghts everyday, playin ball and not playing ball. i have that desire of wanting to "Slam it down with Authoritay!" lol. i am determined to be able to dunk it. i was just wondering if it was possible to slam it by my 17 b-day? iF you guys think its not possible, im going to do the possible because i have confidence and determind. my other friend thinks i wont be able to dunk any time soon, so i will prove him wrong. more updates every other day.

i dont have any chest wieghts, i only have ankle wieghts. :( i play basketball for about 2 1/2 hours a day. my friend that let me use the ankle wieghts told me that if i played basketball with the wieghts on my ankles and shot like i would in a regular 4v4 or 5v5 with friends it would mess up my shot. is this true?

im only 16, i dont go to school, i love basketball for everything that it is. i cant just buy something on the computer that i want. whatever i want, i have to work my way to get it. i live with sister and nuthin is handed to me. i live of the streets not literatly on the streets), im street smart. so whenever i need money, i do what i need to do. is the wieghts sold at a ***** sporting goods or atheltic arena or somewhere? u neve see people asking ?'s about defense because people think that being able to dunk is the only thing there is in basketball. they all forget about, Passing, dribbling, defence, offence, confidence, team player, and being a team player. one of my friends used the anlkle weights and is able to dunk it. he isnt in his prime anymore though. he doesnt play ball, but when he did, he said he used the ankle wieghts to make him able to dunk it.

you're going to tear your knees up (your ankles too).
you need to strengthen the muscles in your calves without putting any more stress on your ankles or knees. try this:
put weights on your shoulders, and find a curb, or a step, and put the tips of your feet (front half of foot) on the edge of the curb or step with the back half of your foot hanging off the edge of the curb or step stand there with the back half of your feet off the curb or step, so that you're holding your entire body up by the upper part of your feet. standing on the same curb, or step, the same way, with the back of your feet hanging off the edge, stand on your tippy toes, and then lower yourself back down to where you were standing, with your feet hanging off the edge. do it over and over. you want to shore up the muscles in your calves. this is the secret to jumping higher. those muscles just have to get bigger and bigger. you can do it if you practice. it just depends how many hours per day you want to do "tip toe practice". (realistically, to reach your goal, i'd start out with 50 reps every day. doesnt matter how much it hurts, do it anyway. but take sunday off if you want. build up from there. at some point in time, you should be doing these reps for at least 2 hours every day, nonstop. determination is dedication!!) you might look funny doing it, but in 6 months to a year, you might be able to dunk.
if you need a bar, or something to grab onto to hold your balance, thats all OK for the first couple weeks you're doing this. but if you cant learn to hold your own balance, while your doing these excersizes, it will be difficult to do the things you need to do to menuver your body through the air, and get that ball where it needs to go. with strengthening your muscles, you also need to get a good center of balance going.
i'm telling you, rest the ankle weights you do have on your shoulders, and do the calve extentions.
or fill your backpack/bookbag with all kindsa dictionarys/encyclopedias (shite, rocks if you have to), and everything else possible, strap it to your back, and just do those calve extentions until you can barely walk, because you're so sore. IT WILL WORK!!! I PROMISE!!!
my brother in law had a 42 inch virticle, and he did not have those. HIS KNEES ARE RUINED REGARDLESS
the only way to get your body to jump higher is to stretch the muscles further in your calves, so they can extend, and shoot your body better.

yeah buddy you are tearing up your knees REALLY bad, get off the ankle weights ASAP! I've provided a link down below to a website you can purchase a weight belt which is far more effecient and better for your knees. Not only is playing the weight belt not going to effect your shot its actually good for you to develop strength and (the all important) hops.
I'd like to point out as a basketball purist, it really saddens me to hear all of these how do I jump higher, can I dunk, how can I dunk better questions. Where are the how can I learn how to score in the post questions? Where are the how can I improve my dribbling questions? And you NEVER hear anyone ask how can I become a better defender? Those are the tools missing from the game today and it's very very sad.

how close to dunking are u now? can u grab the rim? can u grab the rim with two hands? just how close are u? i dont know where ur leap is at right now so i cant really gauge if u can dunk by age 17. all u really said was that ur 5'8 and use ankle weights.
if u want to try something new that will really put some strength in ur feet, achilles and calves...buy jumpsoles. when u try them, u might not feel anything when ur finished but the next morning ur lower legs will be sore. i used it more for increasing my speed and getting my calves bigger (both happened after religiously following the program) but its also highly recommended for adding vertical.

I think if you want to "SLAM IT DOWN" you need to have a very good foundation(LEGS, Quads, hamstings etc.) and strong upper body..get rid of the ankle weights and you should start "beefin up your body"(GYM!!!) anyways whats your weight?? Weight is also a big factor.. i can grab the rim easily but cant dunk because of the extra upper body weight.. so im tryin to shed some pounds. As for dunking at your 17th birthday? I think its possible but you must be religious at your training. GOOD LUCK!!!

I'd try get a weight vest or belt instead of the ankle weights. My cousin's football coach used ankle weights and had to have both of his knees replaced at a fairly young age (20 somthing or low 30's).
I guess it's possible.

the easiest thing that will help you jump higher is to do monkey jumps. i know they sound goofy and you'll feel stupid doing them but they help. a monkey jump is when you crouch down so your hands touch the floor then you stand up and jump as high as you can in one motion. start off with doing 15-20 of those in a row and then work your way up.
