A tourist visa is $15U.S.$20Aust.You are able to extend your visa by application,there is usually no problems at all with doing this.
There is no hassle in getting your visa at the airport in Cairo when you arrive.
I usually do it while waiting for my luggage to be offloaded and come through on the roundabout.
The Visa office is just a short walk across the same area, and
I have never had to wait more than 10minutes max. to be served by the staff if they happen to be busy.

You can get a Visa for Egypt from the Airport, so you dont need to apply for one beforehand.
It costs around $40US. But if you are an egyptian (i.e. you either enter with an egyptian passport, or you have an egyptian ID if you enter with another countries passport) you can get in for free.
