I would catch what is called "the fast train" from Rameses station to Alexandria. It is not only faster, but cleaner and more comfortable than the normal train.
Catching a bus is another option.
But the buses go too fast to really see anything of the scenery and take longer than the train.
I have also found using the bus alternative that sometimes, you have such very dodgey "necessity stops" along the way that you decide to just, hang in there!

HONESTLY, if you want my opinion, I would take the train. Especially if you're not used to the driving in Egypt. WHY? Because theor driving can be a little scary if you're not used to it, and some taxi drivers the (and sadly even bus drivers) will have no hesitation in driving 150km, on a road that isnt safe doing more then about 80km. The train takes exactly the same amount of time, and another advantage is, they have FIRST class seats on the train, (as well as second and third- (I would NOT recommend third class, you sit on wooden garden benches)). And the tickets are less than 20 egyptian pounds (even for first class).
