Sirius Black slashed the picture..... he was trying to gain access into the dormitory to find Peter Petigrew also know as Ron's rat scabbers.

The deer/stag was the animagus the Harry's father could form into. It is explained very well in the books. I would recommend reading them, they obviously go into much greater detail than the movies.... and i am always left feeling disappointed with the movies because of this. a lot of info has been left out.

Sirius Black when he was still in his dog form.. You can see from the movie that the slashes were made by an animal, not a human. He did that because he was angry that he can't go into the Griffindor Common Room because he gave the wrong password.

Harry's Patronus take a form of a stag (the big deer). I don't think it was exactly mentioned in the book like this, but there are speculations that different people's Patronus take a form of different thing. So maybe it is truly because Harry's father can turn into a stag, but I'm not so sure.. =)

Its all from the book. Sirius Black slashed up the portrait of the Fat Lady, to get into Harry's dormitory.
His 'protector' came in the form of a stag because that is the

****spoiler content here****

Form his father took when he changed into an animal. That is why Harry thinks his dad is still alive. Although, you find out the REAL answer a book or two later. :-)

HP ROCKS!

Sirius did it to tell Harry that he's in danger

Big deer is the other image/form from his father.
Like Wormtail which can turn into rat
(I forgot what they call it in the book)

Hope it helps.

PS. I'm a HUGE fan of Harry Potter.
But I haven't read the latest 2 books
(The Order of the Phoenix and The Half Blood Prince)

Sirius Black slashed the portrait of the fat lady because all the passwords he gave her were wrong, and so she wouldn't let him into the portrait hole, so he slashed out on her. He was trying to get in to go after Ron's rat, who (as you probably know) is actually Wormtail. And his protector (called a patronus) comes in the form of a stag, yes that's originally from the book...I don't recall them saying why it took that form though. I THINK it's his dad's animagus form....hm, now i'm wondering. I'll have to dig through the pages again.

Sirius Black slashed up the portrait of the Fat Lady out of frustration. Every password he tried (from the list that Neville made of the week's passwords) was incorrect, so the Fat Lady would not let him and he reacted violently. He was trying to get into the Gryffindor common room because he was trying to get to Peter Pettigrew who was hiding in the form of Ron's rat, Scabbers.

Harry's Patronus came in the form of a stag because his father, James Potter, was a stag in animagus form.

Sirius Black slashed the picture while in dog form... he was trying to get in to get to Wormtail (Ron's rat Scabbers). Harry's protector was in the form of a deer because that was the animal that his father could transform into. It was in the book and not really explained in the movie.

Sirius slashed the pictures... he went inside the castle to look for Peter Pettigrew(Scabbers)....

Harry's Patronus came into the form of a deer because I think he pictured his parents when he casted the patronus back in the lake... and his father's animagus form is a stag.

YES, the deer is from the book. I was really disappointed in the 3rd movie, because it left A LOT out. Book 3 was one of my favorites in the series. I recommend you read it. I think you will enjoy it, and it will help you immensely in understanding the many "gaps" in the movie. I don't want to ruin it for anyone who wants to read book 3, so email me if you want more detail about the deer.

**EDIT** Whoops. Well, looks like everyone else already gave you that info about the deer.

honestly..i dont know why everyone is telling you to read the books & why you dont know who slashed the picture.

its in the movie:

dumbledore: mr. filch round up the ghosts! have them find the fat lady!

filch: there's no need for ghosts. the fat lady's there *points randomly to off camera*

*everyone moves over*

dumbledore: dear lady! who did this to you?!

fat lady: *blubbers sobs* nasty temper he's got...& a soul as dark as his name! *shrieks* SIRIUS BLACK!! *hides behind..i think its a hippo..or rhino...forget that but one of those beasts*

*everyone freaks*

*hermione stares at harry*

(& since the fat lady knew it was sirius black...then sirius black slashed her while in human form NOT in padfoot form! otherwise the fat lady would of said something like..."a big dog! a GRIM! IN THE CASTLE!!" cuz no one...but professor moony remus lupin..& scabbers the rat..knew about sirius able to do animagic & change into a dog. so he slashed the portait as sirius black not as a mutt...very stupid of him but sirsius is a bit of a dumbass so not surprisign...one of my fav characters though besides remus lol)

as for the werewolf, well after the fat lady's episode dumbledore had everyone in the great hall & the castle locked down as a fortress...in the background is a wolf's howl as the full moon is in the sky...so he's chagned somewhere..probalby shreiking shack...

the patronus is formed into something one fells most safe with. harry feels safe whenever he thinks about his parents & his dad used to turn into a stag (called prongs on the map) & so harry's patronus took the form of his dad's animagus form. this was NOT shown very well in the movie. its for non-book readers to pick up after the hundreth time...lupin is a werewolf AND he knows aout the map? OHHH he msut be moony!...& so on & so forth...kinda dumb that they left the marauders history out....but anyway....)
