Persian history is being forgotten? I have to disagree with that. I think there is still alot that we can learn from the early Persians that archeology is still revealing.

If your referring to the narratives from the Persian wars against the Greeks, the dominant narratives that tells us about the Persian wars are from the Greeks themselves. There are biases in the Greek narratives - ie Herodotus, but these are sifted out by true historians.

But I think that the narratives of a absolute monarchy (Persia)against the free-loving democratic societies (Greeks) is something which other Greek tragedy writers such as Aeschylus tell us about - and does appeal to modern democractic societies.

Persian history is not forgotten but the Greek narratives are so dominant. We have to wait until more sources are unearthed by archeologists on Persian accounts of the wars.

Don't worry, history never forgets, it can't, it is inherant in its existance.....

... you see history is the process of recording major world events....so the mere act of recording these events immortalize them...

Persian history will not be forgotten, but you hear about Greek history more often simply for the fact that no other culture has effected life as we know it like the Greeks... We owe the Greeks for Rights and Freedoms.. democracy.. philosophy... science..athletics..and so many other things that revolutionized how we live...

You see persia has a long history... and a good one... but really there is no comparison.... Greece history is richer, the influence Greece has had overshadows persias history, and the Greek culture has been a light to the world, we cant say the same for Persia... Greeks valued Intellect, Strength, Good looks, and Courage, the best of humanity.. persia valued luxury, slavery and overindulgance.

not only Greeks but Persians and all people of the world have to recognise and praise the Ancient Greeks as their forfathers who have given them all that is good in our world today.......

Because, according to ancient Greek historians, the Persians were barbarians who only wanted to wreak havoc on the Greek homeland! lol. Just kidding (though they did say that). I think it is becuase we have so much information about Classical Greek history and they made so many developments (democracy, philosophy, the works of Homer, the building of the Parthenon, etc) that they are still studied in depth today.

NOTE:

Laurence F has his facts a little screwed up. The greeks were just as creul to each other. When Athens defeated a little city in 400's BC, he had all of the women and children slaghtered and sold all the men as slaves. Not the only time that happened either. As for the whipping of the water, that is considered to be a figurative statement. He didn't ACTUALLY whip the water, but he was angry enough to demand that something be done. The greeks were just as creul, if not more so, throughout their own areas. Think of Sparta and Athens and the trouble they stirred up and the autrocities they preformed. The persians were not worse than the greeks.

This is because of two reasons. One, that history is written by the winners and ultimatley the Greek civilization won over the Persian. Even the Eastern Roman Empire which became the Byzantine Empire outlasted the Sassiniad Persian Empire.
Secondly, we are of the western civilization and thus the ancient civilizations of the west are glorified and of cause their enemies are villified. Hence Persian history is largely ignored.

There are two points to this. That the Persians were more cruel then the Greeks. And they were slightly more arrogant. For instance in 480 B.C. when Xerxes was crossing the hellispont and a storm wrecked his boat bridge he had the waters whipped. What a stupid and arrogant idiot thing to do. Even if for morale purposes(and the Persians were not big on morale) it only really showed weakness and stupidity and also there were better ways. Also at Thermopyle when the Persian troops failed in there attack, Xerxes had all their women killed to encourage his troops to get the Greek women-lovely. A battle in which warned by Mardonius to send cavalry to hold the pass, Xerxes, proudly refused and thus it cost him 3 days and 19,100 men. This was out of three army corp of (five infrantry Miriads and one cavalry Miriad each)= 60,000 x 3 = 180,000 + the 10,000 Immortals and some others totaling about 200,000 men. Not the vast hordes of 2,500,000 combat troops of Herododus. Also the Persians used slaves in their navies. Unlike the Greeks and Romans. They used poor citizens or others and paid them. In fact in the Athenian navy it was the class of citizens who couldn't even afford the light armoury of the Peltasts(spear throwers) who constituted the rowers of the navy. In Rome they were against using slaves to be responsible for the mobility of one of their armed forces, in fact the rowers would sometimes be called upon to help defend the ship. When Augustus wanted 20,000 rowers for his new navy he bought 20,000 slaves, freed them and employed them as rowers. The Persians should perhaps have been more aware and caring of what history would think of them. As Pericles said of the achievements and democracy of Athens: "Future generations will call us blessed".

However there is another side of the story. The Persian Empire was built by pastoralists who were brought up with three basic learnings. To throw a spear, to ride a horse and to tell the truth. This is a noble indication of the people. They were better than any empire that preceded them. They freed a lot of people enslaved and exiled by the Chaldean(New Babylonian) Empire and had a generaly fair system. They introduced a postal and road system(eg: The Royal road from Susa to Sardis) and improved the conditions of the people. They built an empire that many consider, although personally I don't-however an official google site does-the largest empire in the ancient world. They had a splendid civilization: eg, the palace at Persapolis. And when their time came, although they were let down by the system and their last great king-Darius III, they fought bravely. And against possibly the greatest general of all time-with one of the most deadly armies of all time. And Darius III was willing after ISSUS to compromise in offering Alexander his daughter's hand in marriage, 10,000 talents and all the lands west of the Euphrates. An offer which Alexander declined to accept.

So on the whole it is unfortunate that Persian history is largely ignored. Even the Sassiniad Persian Empire which came about c220 A.D. with the fall of the Parthian Empire gave Rome quite a bit of trouble and when it fell at the hands of the Omriad Caliphs it was after a bloody and tenuous three day battle. They went down fighting. And it was the Persian civilizaton which gave imputus for the brilliance of the Abbysian Caliphate in the 8th century. There is a resurgence of Mongol and even Chinese and Indian history. There should be the same as far as Persian history. For when it fell it took what was possibley the greatest general in history to fell it.(His possible rival being Sun Wu Szu of China). And far after it fell it's influence influence for good much of western Asia's history. A noble undertaking indeed. A noble empire.

Why should we remember. The Medes have also been forgotten but who cares ?
"Greek references to "Median" people make no clear distinction between the "Persians" and the "Medians"; in fact for a Greek to become "too closely associated with Iranian culture" was "to become medianized, not persianized". The Median kingdom was a short-lived Iranian state and the textual and archaeological sources of that period are rare and little could be known from the Median culture which nevertheless made a "profound, and lasting, contribution to the greater world of Iranian culture"
Something which is not known is that even zoroaster was a Mede. It's time for arrogant Persians to get over themselves.

Because scarcely any Persians bothered to write about it. There's the Bisutun inscription of Darius, and then - well, not much.
It's probably compounded these days by the Islamic Republic - everything before Islam conquest is just Jahliya - the ignorance.

I agree that human beings ought to grasp extra in regards to the historic previous of the Persian Empire--it did a great deal to create civilization as all of us realize it as we talk. i think of the historic previous of the Persian Empire is to no longer boot frequently happening in Europe and the US since's viewed to be a element of jap civilization, somewhat than Western. maximum Westerners look to historic Greece because of the fact the "founder" of Western civilization. This being suggested, enable me ask you a question: How plenty do you recognize approximately historic China? Or historic India? Or the classic civilizations of the Americas (such because of the fact the Incans or the Mayans)? Are you extra upset that the classic historic previous of YOUR ancestral subculture isn't properly frequently happening, or that the contributions of MANY historic cultures are no longer properly frequently happening?
