To insist that English be the only language spoken in America is ridiculous. With all the immigrant groups here, that is impossible. The only way you can accomplish that is by forcing people to speak English at gunpoint.
There are many successful bilingual, or multilingual societies around the world (Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Singapore)

No, because the word America is Spanish.

However English should be the official language of the business world.

nah...it makes things interesting to have other languages. If you speak english, youre not hurting, because youre speaking the primary language! so no biggie!

And if we said yes to this question, then it follows that french should be the only language spoken in france, german the only language spoken in germany, spanish the only language spoken in mexico, spain, and other spanish-speaking countries, chinese the only in china, etc. etc....if this is the case, sounds like everyone would be stuck in their own countries, basically. LAME.

So, basically, everyone who said yes to this question is RETARDED! English will always be the primary language in the united states (until the world collapses due to everyones stupidity, at least), so what the hell's the big deal? If you speak english, you're good, if you don't, you basically gotta learn it to survive in america....so it's on the non english speakers to learn, and it really doesnt affect the english speakers...come on now.

I hope not.

English should be the most common medium of communication and it already is, actually.

But think about the culture and special phrases and meanings that come with different languages. Think of the insights and wisdom that follow down the ages from other countries. Think of the special connection you have with people of the same roots as you. Why would anyone want to disregard all that just so everyone can speak the same tongue?

No. There are immigrants from all over the globe, and there is no reason that they cannot use their native language. However, English should be the only official language for any government purpose; all naturalized citizens are required to learn it for citizenship, so it will not be a hardship.

Different cultures are what makes America so beautiful why ruin it. Most people do learn english when living in America. I hear this complaint all the time and it's so annoying.

Of course not! Everyone needs to know basic English so we can all get along but knowing 2nd or 3rd or more languages is fantastic. It brings a complexity to the culture and improves your understanding of other people's cultures.

You call that stuff they speak in Missouri English? I really find it odd that people get so excited about wanting people to speak a language that isn't even named after our country and that half of it used to belong to Mexico anyway.

I really couldnt care less. I speak spanish, so if someone wants to speak spanish it doesnt bother me one bit.

Plus I think everyone could do with learning another language, it leads to being more open-minded in my view.
