So you sign a contract every time your car goes into a garage to be fixed, the contract is implicit in any business transaction and the money should be paid.
If I were you I would look very carefully at my friend as any money borrowed would not be paid back.
As far as the court order is concerned no he does not have a leg to stand on.

He could refuse to pay the money, but it would be wrong not to repay a debt he knows to be legitimate. I doubt the courts would enforce anything without a contract because he could pretend he doesn't owe anything and they couldn't prove it.

The best advice: find a lawyer. Bring all relevant documents, including the "court order" to the lawyer. Answer the lawyer's questions. Lawyer will give you advice. Pay lawyer. Follow advice.

When he borrowed the money there was probably an agreement to pay it back. Even if verbal, this is a contract.

If he owes money he owes money. You don't need to have signed something for the other party to claim his money back.

You better try to find a way to help your friend to settle his financial obligation instead of helping him to get away with it. Imagine your friend being in the other person's shoes, wouldn't he demand for him money.
This kind of people like you harm the society. I wonder is this example what to give to your children, becoming irresponsible persons?

if he didnt sign anything when he borrowed the money then they shouldn't have given any money to him because they have no agreement with him to say that he'll pay it back
