the benefit from such debates is that we all get the views of a varied section of society. since besides the expert panel that they have on such shows, they do let the audience also express themselves. its a platform where a person can air his views about various subjects which are playing a role in our society.
but then these debates to give rise to controversies too. so we have to ask ourselves, whether we are mature enough to handle all this!

The answer is a simple NO. The only reason they still do it is because the debaters get their 15 minutes of fame and the News Channel get some content to fill in the gaps between one news report to another.
Beside some of the debates these days are lucrative too as News Channel often ask their viewers to send in their comments by SMS and they earn a percent of the amount incurred by the viewers in sending an SMS.

That reminds me a quote I once read somewhere.. Said by a reporter "Dont wipe the blood. It looks good on TV"

you dont have much of a past answers record to judge by
you dont reference the topic you will be debating
nor the news channle
nor who you will be debating

there is a debatable benifit in any debate
you have been chosen for your area of expertise or because you fit the profile they are after to make a point
will it be a live debate [edited or unedited]
what has your experience to the debated topic to give to the debate
there are too many debateable points to conclusivly say yes or no
this means my answer is no
but why ask
if you believe you will be allowed to speak it is your choice
my previous seeing is you wont
unless they aim to use you to make an important point it just is not that wise
are you prepared to stick to the point you wish to make ,
or will they be able to make you [and thus your point look silly]
