The candidates are serious already. Of course that doesn't mean that WE should take them seriously.

It has pretty much already started for the Major Candidates like Obama, Clinton, McCaine and Giuliani. It will only build as time moves on.
Another interesting point is that a few potential candidates like Al Gore, Sam Brownback, and Chuck Hagel have yet to really do much. My theory is they are waiting for some of the front runners like Clinton and Obama to use up their respective war-chests and to self destruct before next year.

About 2 years before the next general election. That means it started last November. It'll ratchet up one more gear comes this November.
