The strongest chess-playing software program in the world is rybka by Vasik Rajlich. Go to his web site, go to the Rybka Forum, and ask what hardware the testers are using.

Also, go to the Independent Testing links and ask the testers.

Actually, most chess software cannot utilize more than a few hundred MB of RAM. And don't spend a lot of money on sound or video.

I have no idea why you would need $5000 for chess... Chess comes second, figure out what else you are going to use the computer for then come ask a question.

It's not 1965 and you don't need Deep Blue to play chess.

The complexity of the chess engine is going to come from the software driving it....any modern processor is quite capable of outthinking you given the right programming

That's right!

Well, rather you can try:
Pentium Core2Duo™ with 1.86 GHz, 1GB DDR2 RAM and any compatible motherboard. That's it.
These are the main requirements for a Fast Processing PC! No need of a graphics accelerator card for Chess!!!

So, it will definitely fit in your budget.

Umm? The chess program would only be as good as the person who wrote it.

Chess is not a processor intensive program, (unless thats the only thing the computer is programed to do). and you would not be able to play chess on it, it would only send the "moves" to a second computer.

But if you want to know the best pc processor for 5,000.00 http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Aurora_ALX/aurora_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-AURORA-ALX-R7&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

You dont need $5,000 for a high end PC. I suggest you go to www.newegg.com and look for a pentium 4 desktop computer with about 2.66g intel cpu, 1gb of ram (memory) or so along with mobo and dvd rw/cd rw drive, 100gb to 250gb hard drive, atx case with 500 watts power supply...
