I think 16 should be the lowest possible age for legally having sex, no matter what the age of the other person involved is.

Many teens I've known have been mature enough at 16 to handle it. Some havent been, but then, they shouldnt. And its up to them in the end.

I think there should be much much better sex ed. in schools. Not the ridiculously uninformative abstinence based stuff, but actually teaching them to use condoms and other such things so they dont f*ck it up when they ignore the abstinence teachers advice and have sex anyway, like many do.

People at the age of 16 don't really now what they are really doing, so it should be illegal until at least the age of 21. Both the man and the woman should be arrested and given a record for life since they both willingly participated in it even though they don't even know what they are doing. Girls these days should be at least 21 years old and should be married before having sex.

All 16 year olds think they know better. They think they have all the answers.....just as I did when I was 16. Truth is, that someone who is 16 is a child, and does not know whats best. Anyone who has reached adulthood knows this.

Many people are still far from being an adult at 18, but unfortunately, the line has to be drawn somewhere.

If the age is lowered to 16 now, in a few years children will be saying....well why not 14? Its only 2 years difference.

I don't think the law should change, but it's not like it stops anybody now from doing it. I do not think anybody under 18 is really responsible enough to handle sex, and even at 18, they may not be responsible enough.

What is the rush anyway?

I just think we need to shut MTV and stations like that up. Maybe bring in some feminism to widespread audiences instead of rap videos with girls in bikinis all over the place. Then maybe a lot of girls will respect themselves a bit more and wait until later on, and maybe guys will respect that about them.

Or maybe I'm just a dreamer.

Consenual sex is a personal and private matter that should only occur when both partners are responsible enough to handle the consequences. Government should stay out of decision-making when it comes to moral issues. I don't think any political entity has enough moral authority to dictate to a nation on how to behave in a given situation. That's up to individuals, parents, families, & churches to make a determination on presenting responsible behavior to the community, not the government or politics.

not reallly 16 is still too young. Though they think they are so smart and know the world oh so well, but in reality they don't have in real life experience. So 16 is not an age where sex should be legal.

Listening to all you guys saying, I had one other thought. What if a 16 yr old girl has sex with a boy younger than her? Who will you drag to court? Both of them? I have heard of condoms and pills being confiscated from students, both boys and girls, in the 9th grade and 10th grade. There was one instance where a 8th grade student had a porn VCD in his schoolbag. I seriously can't comprehend what it will be like when my son grows up to be that age.

Age is not the issue. Our problem is education. Kids are not more mature than before. They are even more disoriented. Parents spend less time with them and all they see is really bad programs on the ever present TV.
If boys and girls are well educated on the pros and cons of sex, why not do it at 16? The problem is they aren't.

many states in the U.S. have 16 as the age of consent. Although often there may be conditions, such as age of partner not being over a certain age.
