If you download it from a location other than 'messenger.yahoo.com', it is possible. Make sure you download from legitimate sources.

It is helpful if you explain why you are asking this question.
The answer to your question is No. It is not a virus and you don't get a virus with it if you download it from the Yahoo site.
If you are having performance problems after downloading Yahoo Messenger it is most likely due to your computer being cluttered.
Prior to downloading any Yahoo product you should do some basic computer cleaning to ensure a good download.
Go to Add/Remove Programs and find the Yahoo Messenger and remove it. Then:
Clean the Browser Cache.
Clearing Cache: Internet Explorer 7.x
Here's how to clear your cache with Internet Explorer 7.x browsers:
Launch your Internet Explorer browser.
1. Click on the Tools menu at the top of the browser.
2. Click on Internet Options from the drop-down menu.
3. Click on the Delete... button in the Browsing History section.
4. Click on the Delete Files... button in the Temporary Internet Files section.
5. Click the Close button on the Delete Browsing History screen.
6. Click OK on the Internet Options screen.
7. Close all browser windows , and restart Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer 6.x for Windows
On the toolbar that runs across the top of the Internet Explorer browser (where you see "File," "Edit," "View," etc.), click the "Tools" menu.
1. Select "Internet Options..." from the pull-down menu. You should be in the General tab. Under "Temporary Internet files," click the "Delete Cookies..." button.
2. Click "OK" on the "Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?" window.
3. Next, click the "Delete Files..." button. Check the box next to "Delete all offline content" and click "OK."
4. Click the "Clear History" button under toward the bottom right. When asked "Are you sure you want to delete your history of visited web sites?" click "Yes."
5. Click the "OK" button, close then restart your browser.
After cleaning the Browsers Cache you should do a Disk Cleanup.
Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. Run the program and then check all the boxes and click OK.
Do a Disk Defragmentation. Follow the above path and choose Disk Defragment instead of Disk Clean up. Highlight each each Drive it lists and click Analyze. This will tell you if it needs defragging.
After doing the above, reboot your computer. Go immediately to the Yahoo Messenger download site and download it.

Bottom line is that everything downloaded from the internet has the possibility to be a virus. As long as you typed in http://messenger.yahoo.com yourself, you can be very sure that it's virus free. You can also run a virus scan on it (good internet practice anyways). If you need a virus scanner, try AVG ( do a yahoo search for "AVG Free") It's what I use on my systems. One last thing: although yahoo messenger isn't a virus, be careful of any files you recieve through it, as there's nothing preventing those from being viruses. Again, be sure to always run a virus scanner and don't open files from people you don't know and you'll be reasonably safe.
