Many people, including myself, describe their female rats as smelling like grape soda and their male rats as smelling like warm taco chips. If you are not offended by these two odors then you would not find rats odious. Of course, keeping the cage clean and free of urine and feces will allow you to enjoy having your rats around.

I've had female mice as pets, and I don't find them odious. I've never had male mice but you can tell from a distance if a pet store carries males. They are ripe little stinkers :)

They wash themselves like cats and don't stink if you keep their cages clean.

It really helps if you feed them a high quality diet like Reggie Rat or Kaytee rodent blocks (the better the food- the less poop) and keep them on pine*... you can also give them a bit of fresh parsely to eat each day to reduce the smell of their feces and urine.

*some rats are sensitive to the dust and oil in wood- watch for sneezing, crusty eyes, runny nose, or wheezing. If your rat shows any of these signs, err on the side of caution and switch to a recycled bedding like carefresh or softsorbent. Aspen and other soft white woods are okay, but don't do as good a job with the smell... just avoid cedar.
