Paid surveys are not always a scam. There are some scams, but there are also genuine ones where you can earn money or vouchers in return for doing surveys online. Unfortunately, some companies do sell your details on so it's best to have a 'throwaway' email address you can ditch if you end up with too much spam.
This is a neat article on paid online surveys, how they work and how to avoid the scams and listing some companies you can register with: http://www.moneytowers.com/2006/making-money/online-surveys/

Well, some of them are...but there are also legit sites out there where you can get paid to take surveys (not a hugh amount...but something).
I've listed most of the sites I have taken surveys through and actually been paid (or received other rewards like gift cards or CD'S) on the following webpage:
http://www.windhavenweb.com/surveys
I list how they pay you, what I like and dislike about them, whether they have an affiliate or referral program, etc. (And yes, if I say they have an affiliate program, I'm part of it, and make a commission when someone signs up through that link...I like to be up front about that).
But, yes, there are also scams out there. Here are some tips to avoid them:
Don't sign up for any survey site which asks you to pay to access the surveys. Also watch for language like "get paid for taking surveys AND SIGNING UP FOR OFFERS" if you don't want to have to sign up for stuff with other companies to get paid.
Always carefully read their terms of service and privacy policy. If in their privacy policy they say they only use aggregated info, this is GOOD SIGN they are legit. Aggregated info information that is grouped together so it can't be connected with anyones personal identification like name, e-mail, phone or address. That's what survey sites SHOULD collect. Avoid sites that say they give, rent, or sell any personal information (info that is not aggregated) to third parties (unless you really don't mind getting junk mail, telemarketing calls, and spam).
Also, never sign up for a survey through an unsolicited e-mail--since these might not even be from the site they claim to be, but could be a phishing scheme to get your information and mis-use it. And never give your credit card info--there is no good reason a legitimate free site would need it.
Here are two other sites which are very helpful

The rule, as always, is to stay away from those that ask you to pay before you can get these surveys.
Legitimate market survey companies such as Pinecone Research recruit members based on demographic characteristics -- e.g. mothers of babies 0-12 years old -- and will send surveys of products and services targeting this demographic group. Pinecone Research, however, pays only $5 per survey -- you're definitely not going to be rich with that. They can give you anywhere from 1-5 at most surveys in a month.
Other companies simply ask you to answer as many research as possible, and you don't earn anything just the chance to win at a raffle (which I find lame).

Try SurveySavvy , it's free to sign up and you get paid to take surveys. I'm a member and it offers you a great opportunity to make a difference and earn money at the same time by taking research surveys online ~ I made $20.00 on my first survey and you also get paid for any survey your referrals take (the more REFERRALS you get, the more money it's possible to make!!!) P.S. They are a member of the Better Business Bureau!!
