No you can not. You need a router and a cable box of course to get internet and 2 RJ45 cables. (1) Plug the cable box into the router. (2) Xbox into the router. (3) Computer into the router. It will work.

If the modem is a broadband modem for Cable or DSL, then yes.

If its just a normal dial up Modem, then no.
