we have a mexican girl 23 years old that has been working for us for the past year. she speaks no english at all. she works 11 hours a day and is the only mexican there along with my mom and cousin. i try to converse with her to keep her from being bored but conversation is somewhat difficult. i know some spanish because i took 3 years in high school. we had some decent conversations before and i try to talk to her everyday. she only speaks when i talk to her and never talks to me. she is not a shy person. when i stand next to her it feels awkard like she is trying to avoid eye contact with me and she looks uncomfortable when im close. should i just stop trying to speak to her.

You have to remember that Mexican males have machismo and treating a female as a true "equal" is not common. Don't get me wrong, women are respected but they have a different and clearly understood role. The man is the "king of the house." If you are treating her like an equal, especially when your family employs her, it probably makes her uncomfortable because the situation is foreign and risky to her.

If she got close to you and things went badly, where would that leave her? In a very awkward position at work.

She is probably also - because of the cultural barrier - unclear about your intentions and not sure how to find out what's what without offending you. Try to look at the situation from her point of view.

If you'd like to better understand what's going on in her head, ask her if she'd like to take a walk with you after she gets off duty. If she relaxes outside her "job" then you can chalk her nervousness up to the situation, not you. If she declines the walk, you can assume she's not that interested in talking to you. Should that happen, remain friendly in passing but give her the space she needs.
