They just brought out the Monte Carlo in the rear wheel drive. I have it and love it. It feels more balanced.
Most ppl prefer front wheel drive. Front-wheel drive cars were the efficient, sophisticated wave of the future, when they were new on the market. The advantages of front-wheel drive, avoiding the need for a driveshaft connecting the engine in front with the rear wheels, front-drive cars save space. The entire drivetrain can be packed into a neat compartment in the front, leaving the rest of the car's volume for passengers and cargo. Plus, front-drive cars have better traction in slippery conditions (in part because the weight of the engine is on top of the wheels that are providing the power)..
My husband works for GM, there has been no decission on if they will put more models up for the option of rear wheel drive. I'm sure it will come down to sales.

The 2009 Impala will be rear wheel drive, just like the 1994-96 Impalas. I have a 2001 Impala, and I personally like the front wheel drive. But it will be switching back in '09...

I live in North Dakota. The front wheel drive is better in the winter. The weight is over the drivers and that means a lot better traction.
