The name Bharat was after the great King Bharat, the son of Shakuntala and Dushyant. He was a great king and unified they whole territory of south asian sub-continent. Since then, the territory was known as 'Bharatvarsh'.

Hindustan was the name givan to Bharat in the later phases of british regime. A group of sick people derived this name for the region were hindus could reside, and pakistan for the region where muslims could reside. However, gandhiji foiled the attempts of this group by allowing muslims in India to stay here.

Political name for the country in hindi is Bharat. The term hindustan is prpogated by the peole trying to spread discriminative ideas in the country.

So your question is totally wrong. It should have been - Who gave the name HINDUSTAN to BHARAT?

All the best...

:-)

There is no recognised name as Hindustan. Perhaps, as in Mahabharath King, Bharat ruled the land in this subcontinent south of Himalayas. Hence it is called Bharath.

But, before 15th August 1947 I think, there was nothing called India. The people living in this area was not recognised under one single religion. When Muslims ruled the country, the people were Muslims. During the ruling of Arab kings, all were forced to be arabs, persians etc. But, this area was called Sindu, because of the river called Sindu, and later called Hindu. Hence, before the independence, people here were, Maharshtrians, (even within that, they were marathas, vidharbides etc.), Pandiyas, Cholas, Cheras (not Tamilians), so also in all other places. So attempting to fabricate the history by calling all these individuals with no religions as Hindus is against ethics of History.

In the Baarhaspatyua Samhita it says:

Himalyam Samarabhya
Yavadindusarovaram
Tam Deonirmitam Desham
"Hindusthanam" Prachakshate
Meaning: The country which starts from Himalayas and the borders of which reach till the Indian Ocean (Indu Sarovaram), has been created by Gods and its name is Hindusthan.

It is derived from here.

Name after Hindukush Parbat(mountain)
When the Arians from west invaded our land nearby the Sind river and settled there, they could not get the actual spelling of the river SIND. They used to pronounce it as HIND in place of SIND. As time passed by, the people nearby Sind were been called as the Hindustanis.
