I think it's very sad how clueless responses are in this forum.
Bargnani is a center, really when did this happen? How many 6-10 centers do you know that shoot a ton of 3s, don't rebound, and shoot a dreadful 42.6% from the floor? Bargnani is a power forward.
As mentioned Boozer is a power forward as well, but than the poster who makes the correction says the Rockets are a better team with Mutumbo at the center instead of Yao??? Care to elaborate on that one? I know the record may have been better than expected. Mutumbo gives a 40 year old center who never went more than 38 min in a game and routinely gave you fewer than 30 min, some games only 10-15 min of action. How are the Rockets better with an aging obviously worn down center in the middle over Yao the 12th leading scorer in the league?
And worse than all of this combined is no intelligent discussion of the question took place. Of course it's not hard to imagine with how poorly phrased the question was, but we all knew what he meant.
The international players have definitely made a charge at center. Pau Gasol is one of the top 15 players in the NBA and is a joy to watch. He reminds me of Kevin McHale with his assortment of post moves. Andrew Bogut is developing into a solid center in Milwaukee. Andris Biedrins is having a real breakout year for the Warriors. Darko Milicic is showing signs of life in Orlando. It can be argued whether players like Samuel Dalembert and DeSagana Diop are US or International players. But these new International players are tougher and more physical than their predecessors such as Gheorghe Muresan or Rik Smits.
I still think the International players have a ways to go before they catch the likes of Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire, Marcus Camby, and of course Big Shaq Daddy.

back to the original question...Apart from Yao, you're probably right. Sabonis was a great C but when he arrived in the NBA his best days were far behind him. But after Shaq, who is the next good true C? Miller? Mourning? The other notables, Duncan, Stoudemire, Howard, Boozer, Bosh, J O'Neal, are PF's, aren't they? With tip offs being shown the door, the position requirements are getting redefined. I think in the next 5-10 yrs, the NBA will be just like Europe and playing multi-positions, more 3-pt attemps, increase the tempo. That will herald the end of the dominant C.

I think it's mostly just a reflection of how the game is becoming more universal, and how the center position is slowly becoming extinct. Obviously you have Yao up there to challenge Shaq, and watch out for Bargnani in Toronto, since he has the ability to play center. But then again, that just supports the theory of the "dinosaur" center, who is really a forward that can play multiple positions.
However, I think there are still some good American centers, specifically Ben Wallace and Amare Stoudemire.

The sad thing is there are no "TRUE CENTERS" outside the usa..most of the centers outside the USA shoot 3's, have good fundamentals etc. but they dont have the power of true centers in the USA they are more like PF"S or SF"S.. True centers are Shaq, Chris Kaman, Eddy Curry, Dampier, Ben Wallace, Dwight Howard(PF-C) these are the real centers..the only good center outside the nba is Yao.. others are not so good like Nesterovic, Diop etc.

To above: boozer is a power forward, okur is the center
you have little talent at center hell yao could be considered the #2 center and his team played better with Mutombo as the man
Howard and Amare are from the US though so that keeps the center edge in the US

Not all the best centers are from outside the US. C. Boozer is from Alaska. I think that te rest of he world has caught up and is equal to or better than the US. Players in other parts of the world develope the basic skills of basketball. Big men (centers and power forwards) used to rebound and block shots only. However many big men have learned how to step out and shoot the basketball. I think it is good.

i could be mushy with this on condition that they do it each and each 4 years, probably the year of the Olympics. The NHL tried it with N. united states of america VS the worldwide, and now this is back to standard, so perhaps the NBA ought to accomplish a little factor like that. yet think of approximately it. If the individuals would be unable to overcome Greece, what makes you think of they are going to overcome some factor else of the worldwide?

foreigners just aren't powerful enough. Americans seem to dominate everything and if americans cared enough about playing basketball against other countrys people like kobe bryant and shaq would play in those games and the us would dominate but instead its the us's college players against the worlds best and they still get third. lol USA is the best country in every aspect.
