At the gross level, it is very easy to tell: We are alive, the computer is not. Bacteria has life, sand grains don't ahve.
But when you go deeper, there is a no-man's land. Take viruses. Are they alive or not?
Moving, eating, reproducing, having consciousness and awareness... these are generally listed as characteristics of life. But there may be alien life with many other different features.
