I have a VCR/DVD unit, and I would like to connect it to my computer to transfer some old VHS tapes to DVD. I have a s-video connection on the back of my computer and a digital audio connection next to it too. So, I connected the VCR to my computer via these too connections, but Nero and Windows Media maker wont recognize my device. It keeps saying no device detected, make sure it is on and connected properly. Both cables are connected right, but what could be my problem?

Hi Rebelgirl,

You need an interface like DVD Xpress.

With DVD Xpress you can transfer your video to your hard drive and then edit it if you desire. DVD Xpress comes with basic video editing software. I got mine at Sam's for $59.95. They are cheaper now. You can look at one & read about it here - http://www.usb-ware.com/ads-dvd-xpress.htm

You connect the composite output of your DVR into the DVD Xpress and connect the DVD Xpress to your computer via a USB cable.

Another (expensive - $150) is this device from Pinnacle Systems - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8040611&st=usb+video+editor&type=product&id=1157068283607

The S-Video port probably only goes out to the TV. You need a TV tuner card or other video capture device

I bought the DVD Xpress DX2 last week, and I highly reccommend it

Like the previous respondant noted, the S-Video connection on the back of your computer is S-Video out for connecting to a T.V., not for incoming connections. For what you want to do you will need a Dazzle http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Dazzle/?dz=1
or similar product. You can probably get something that will work just fine on http:tigerdirect.com or really cheap on Ebay.

Are you certain the s-video port on your PC is capable of S-Video in? A lot of S-Video connections on video cards are S-Video out only. Meaning you can only output video from the computer to another device.

If it is S-Video In, try making your connection and reboot the computer.
