Most probably I will be a registered nurse at age 40. Is it advisable to continue with this plan of taking nursing as a second career? Is there still a chance for me to succeed?

Yes if it is something you want to do. The nursing school I attending mostly have people your age attending. Deffffffinately not too late. They make good money and you get the satisfaction of helping others.

There is always a chance to succeed and learn, no matter how late in life you try... And I actually am going to school with a woman who is not only from Japan, but she is also 56 years old... big disadvantage in most peoples opinions... not mine. She's doing better than most people in the class. It will be hard work... but I say if you want to do it, than DO IT!!! And if you don't want to go quite so far as nursing, do Medical Assisting. I'm doing that, and it's only a 10 month program... I love it, and you actually do more than a nurse, because your trained in more areas. And theres not such a big a demand for nurses anymore... however, for Medical Assistans, the demand is VERY high. However, if you want that nursing title, I'd go for it. I'm thinking about continuing in that direction myself. Try it. Worst that could happen is you find out you dont want to do it after all. The answer will always be no if you never try. Have an awesome day!!! =)

Nursing as a second career is becoming a very popular move. Second career students are popular with nursing schools as well as students are more mature and more motivated to excel and succeed.

The tremendous shortage of nurses will mean opportunities will abound for many years to come. As the field develops creative solutions to nursing shortage, many more diverse opportunities will become available as well.

Many schools now offer accelerated programs for students who already have a bachelor's degree. These programs are intense and often provide nursing students with the competency to take the NCLEX after their first year.

This allows them to become and work as RNs while completing their coursework fro an MSN.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) offers a list of schools which offer accelerated BSN or MSN programs.

Nursing has become a very popular choice for second careers due to the salary levels. For single parents nursing offers an opportunity to support a family on one income, and for two-income families it provides an excellent financial resource as well.

In the aftermath of 9/11 it has become an important issue for many people to find a job in which they can make a difference in people's lives. The need to be needed and to fulfill that need for someone is increasingly important. Nursing is a field which definitely provides an opportunity to make a difference every day.

If you're looking for a new career, consider nursing.

In 9 years you will be 45. You'll be 45 whether or not you do it.

Want to be glad you did it, or want to kick yourself for not doing it?
