I noticed something recently, when I look at my skin, it is smooth and soft looking, but when I look at my aunts and teachers, a lot of them have this leathery look to it that wasn't there when they were young. Why is that? I also noticed that that "leathery" look is mostly found in caucasians while blacks, asians, and latinos don't seem to have that dry leathery look.

Caucasians were not meant to live in hot sunny climates. Eg. Tanning is not natural for Caucasians and as you see on the news today, they are paying the price. We all are beautiful in our own way and I really do not understand why white people need to tan.

Protect your skin by staying covered and you will not get that leathery look until you are at least 100 years old.

Wish you a long/non leathery and prosperous life.

This is exactly why you need to start a skin care program when you are young, and stay out of the sun!! Tanning may be pretty but you will pay for it. The people you talk about probably didn't have a skin care program, or just lived in the sun!! It's really cut when all the loose skin starts sagging don't you think?? Not for me. I cleanse, exfoliate, freshen, moisturize, and protect twice daily..morn and night.

I know for sure that part of it depends on how much sun you get on your face. If you tan more, your skin will wrinkle and get kind of a leathery appearance to it as you get older. Also, I think if you don't moistuize on a regular basis, your skin gets drier more quickly and will have a leathery look to it as well.

Loss of moisture causes the leathery look.
Caucasians have less pigment in their skin to protect them from sun damage.

It is loosing the elasticity to the skin. Also, people with oily skin during their younger years, will tend to not have this problems as much
