ok i forgot to include some information in my last question that people were telling me to do...So i'll try again!

My laptop is freezing either at the windows logo on startup, or at random times when trying to reinstall windows. I've tried booting in safe mode, and it still freezes. I've run a memory test and it came out ok. I ran a hard drive test and it froze. I replaced the hard drive and ran the hard drive test and it froze. It also freezes on any restart (screen stays black)

my idea of what is wrong is the hard drive controller. If it is that is there a way to replace just that, or is it something else?

I'll try again. My suggestion would be to go ahead and replace your drive since it sounds like it might be a hard drive problem. Then go online or in a store and look for a SATA/IDE-to-USB 2.0 adapter for 2.5", 3.5" & 5.25"" drives. That way when you have your new drive up and running you can connect your other drive to the adapter which plugs in your USB port and if the drive is not totally wasted you can hopefully retrieve the data off of it, assuming you didn't make a backup.

The device is advertised in a local paper here (MicroCenter) for $23.99. BTW, the controller is integrated on an IDE hard drive (hence the acronym, which stands for Integrated Device Electronics), so replacing the controller on an IDE hard drive is probably not an easy, if even possible, thing to do. (I've never done it).

Another way to try to recover data if that is critical is to make an Image using Ghost and then try to access the data through Ghost Explorer.

On a laptop, I'm not sure you can just replace a controller like that. You may need a new motherboard. Consult your manufacturer's website and see if you can chat with their technical assistance team.
